Stefano Feroci’s fascinating and insightful work on Casanova’s various stays in Tuscany. Well worth checking out.

“Why does Casanova continue to interest readers and scholars—and what remains to be said about him—nearly two hundred years after his posthumously published memoirs first attracted public attention?  Answers to both questions are found in this admirable book by Stefano Feroci, first published in Italian in 2009 as Sulle Orme di Casanova nel Granducato di Toscana (On the Trail of Casanova in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany) and now published in English as Casanova in Tuscany. Those tempted to characterize Feroci’s study as a work of local history—of primarily local interest—should resist the urge and take a closer look. Casanova in Tuscany is, in a sense, the memoirs in microcosm: We see in this study many of the themes in Casanova’s autobiographical masterpiece that generations of readers continue to find so fresh, relevant, and compelling. Feroci’s book also sheds light on the changing views of Casanova and his text and why researchers and scholars are still drawn to this author.” – Tom Vitelli, Casanova scholar and translator.
