In his memoirs, Casanova frequently anonymised the names of his lovers to protect their reputations. Many of them have since been uncovered but not all. One of those was a woman from Montpellier whom Casanova met in London in 1763. She became his mistress in Dresden, three years later, and he found her again in Montpellier, in 1769. “One of the prettiest women in all of France,” Casanova writes. Casanova et la Montpelliéraine by Jean-Calude Hauc is an account of the discovery of her identity. Casanova et la Montpelliéraine will be published in February 2025.
