Casanova had a keen interest in gambling, both as a participant and as a spectator.  It was his insight into the psychology of gambling that enabled him to be one of the key figures in the founding of the 1757 Paris lottery, by far the most successful lottery in the history of Europe up to that point. ‘The history of gambling in France’ is a fascinating 10-page article by Jean-Louis Harouel, Professor emeritus of Law History at the University Paris Panthéon-Assas.

Dave has written an article on Casanova’s involvement in the 1757 Paris lottery, ‘La Loterie de l’École Royale Militaire’ .
